Our Sisters of Africa is a business that my roommate and I dreamed up the summer of 2012 after our trip to Kenya and Uganda. One day, while in Kisumu, Kenya, we visited a high school and got talking to some high school girls about the difficulties and struggles that they go through. The first thing they told us was that they do not have money for sanitary pads, something that we, as Americans, do not think twice about. The girls then either miss 1/4 of their schooling by staying at home embarrassed to go out in public with the possibility of leakage or they resort to prostitution for money. Upon coming back to America, we knew we couldn't go on with our daily lives as if nothing happened. Kelly, Stephanie, and Stephanie's sister; Melissa all got together and were determined to help these women and keep them out of prostitution, we created Our Sisters of Africa. We sell our own handmade jewelry to raise support to buy reusable sanitary pads. 50% OF OUR PROCEEDS go to supporting the young girls in Africa and with the purchase of just one ring you can provide a girl with reusable pads for an ENTIRE YEAR!
